The 2011 Energy Efficiency Integration Awards (EEIA) Winners

For their achievement in combining architectural elegance with sustainability and energy efficiency, four California nonresidential projects received awards of recognition from the 2011 Savings By Design Energy Efficiency Integration Awards program.

Every year, the recognition program, sponsored by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, San Diego Gas & Electric®, Southern California Edison, Southern California Gas Company and Sacramento Municipal Utility District, in conjunction with The American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), acknowledges the extra time and effort it takes to successfully integrate architectural excellence and energy efficiency.

    The Problem:

    Many neighborhoods are filled with small structures that no-longer serve the needs and desires of those communities; and too often, those structures are torn down to make way for larger structures despite their relationship to the context.  This project explored the strategy of ‘mending and re-use’ as an alternate to ‘demolition and replacement’; where the structure is preserved and the public spaces are mended.  This strategy conserves material resources while allowing for change.
